Professional Accomplishments and Milestones

- At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, I rewrote Medical News Today’s pillar content on coronaviruses to dispel myths, adding five million pageviews. In 2021 alone, I brought 13 million unique visitors to the Healthline.com domain.

- Given my direct experience with medical insurance end users, I brought Medicare content to MNT and spearheaded the development of their format for Medicare articles. I work with them on Medicare content to this day.

- As the Senior Editor for the ScreenRant Updates team during 2022, I oversaw and developed a growing team and increased page visits to existing content by 70% in seven months. This equated to over 3 million new sessions and 4 million page visits.

- This explainer on anxiety for Medical News Today provided a concise enough definition that it occupied the Google answer box.

- I produced 5,000 words of clinician-facing copy about telehealth and telemedicine for Wheel, a remote care platform, providing an in-depth overview of telehealth software's importance that now forms the backbone of their communicational approach.

Through my eyes: My first 48 hours
with hearing aids

From time to time, I find that a particular article will pop up and alert me to my own health issues. And that is exactly what happened when I looked into deafness and hearing loss around a year ago.

I was going through the questions a doctor might ask during diagnosis, and I was staggered to find that as few as 5 percent of them did not apply to my own ears.

Sure enough, I took these issues to a doctor, and entered the referral process for treatment by an ear, nose, and throat specialist.

What to know about coronaviruses

Coronaviruses cause a range of illnesses, including COVID-19. They typically affect the respiratory tract, but their effects can extend well beyond the respiratory system.

At the end of 2019, scientists identified a coronavirus outbreak in China. Experts named the newly identified virus severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and the illness that it causes coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19).

What is the average cost of supplemental insurance for Medicare?

The cost of Medicare supplemental insurance plans, or Medigap, varies depending on location, insurance provider, and the type of plan a person chooses.

Some insurance providers offer discounts, factor preexisting conditions into costs, or have high-deductible options.

Medigap is an additional policy that people with Original Medicare (parts A and B) can buy through a private insurer.

Hyponatremia in heart failure: What is the link?

Low blood sodium, or hyponatremia, is a common effect of heart failure. This can lead to worse outcomes while receiving heart failure treatment.

Hyponatremia refers to low sodium levels, a crucial electrolyte, in the blood. Sodium is crucial for blood pressure control, nerve and muscle function, and fluid balance. Various bodily changes can impact sodium levels, including health conditions that change fluid levels.

What to know about tinnitus and dementia

Research has suggested that people who have had tinnitus might also have an increased risk of dementia. Tinnitus and dementia both relate to how some parts of the brain process signals and communicate with each other.

I Went on a Reality Show to Face My Social Anxiety — Well, That Was Dumb

Last October, I took part in a televised social experiment: A British reality show in which five strangers host each other in their homes for three-course dinner parties. At the end of each episode, they rate the experience out of ten.

The winner gets £1,000. Everyone goes back to their homes and lives. Months pass. Then the shows airs, resplendent with a gently mocking voiceover (which has become iconic) and tactically uncomfortable editing.

A Fitness Prince: 5 Fitness Tips from a Royally Recognized Trainer

On most Zoom calls, you log on and spend 5 minutes picking an appropriate (or inappropriate) background, but on rare occasions, a curtsy is in order.

We had the privilege of chatting to Joe Wicks, MBE, of The Body Coach about his tips for staying mentally and physically on-point when you can’t leave the house — and what it feels like to get awards from the actual Queen of England.

How to Tell If Your Relationship Is Changing in the Right Ways

It’s a Saturday.

My wife of 5 years and I are on the sofa, pizza juice dripping from our chins onto our matching Nicolas Cage t-shirts, taking in our third or fourth installment of the Cage-a-thon on which we embarked half a day ago.

It’s a far cry from our first meeting on the streets of Edinburgh nearly 9 years ago, where we got to be that appalling couple making out wherever we damn well please.

Gross, I know. But you and your partner started that way too. No judgies.

Mixing in Mud: Life as a Hearing Impaired Beatmaker

I’m a music producer who can’t hear sh*t, a rapper who didn’t understand his own vocal tone until 2019, and a composer with less than half of all frequencies available to him. As someone for whom music has played a major role since about 5 years old, it does suck.

My hearing loss is high register, meaning that I have the top chunk of frequency missing.

An adult with happy, healthy ears hears up to around 16,000 Hertz (Hz).

How to Find a Career You Love: 5 Steps to Career Happiness

For most people, staying above the breadline means spending 8 hours a day performing tasks for money.

Many of these people experience genuine dread at the thought of pushing through that revolving door at 8:55 a.m., latte shaking in hand. (To translate for 2020: Going downstairs, making yourself a cup o’ Joe, and slumping over the kitchen counter with your head buried in your arms.)

Does Jerking Off Make Your Dick Smaller? Myths and Facts Unveiled

“You’ll go blind.”

“It’ll drop off if you keep playing with it.”

“You know masturbating will summon Cthulhu and usher in centuries of inescapable darkness and sorrow, right?”

You’ve probably heard every myth (except that last one) about self-pleasuring, but is giving your penis a workout going to change its size?

The answer: Not on a lasting basis. Yes, erections are definitely a thing. But no scientific evidence supports the idea that you’ll permanently enhance or shrink your penis through masturbating.

Opioid Use Disorder Treatment:
Medication and More

Opioid use disorder (OUD) means that a person gets used to the presence of an opioid medication or substance in their body. The body can then only achieve normal function when taking opioids. It can make stopping opioid use challenging. Over the past two decades, the opioid epidemic has affected millions of people across the United States. According to the National Center for Drug Abuse Statistics, around nine million individuals abused opioids in 2023, and the substance accounted for more than 70 percent of overdose deaths.

Why Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Stigma Happens and 5 Ways to Cope

According to the American Psychological Association (APA), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) may occur after a person experiences or witnesses a threat to their physical health or life that triggers terror or helplessness. It can lead to debilitating flashbacks, ongoing nightmares, and the avoidance of activities or locations that bring up memories of the traumatic event or events. PTSD can also cause physical reactions like sleep disturbance, concentration or memory issues, a tendency to startle easily, and a sense of guilt about surviving the trauma when others have not.

Soothing Relief for Anal Discomfort

Common digestive problems, including hemorrhoids and anal fissures, can result in itching, pain, and general discomfort. Find out how to soothe that sensitive area and sit comfortably again.

Anal or perianal pain — pain around or inside the anus or rectum — is a common symptom that can cause severe discomfort. The anus has a wide array of nerve endings, meaning that even though many people experience anal pain and the causes aren’t usually serious, the pain can become intense and interfere with your life.

How to Spot 12 Common Bug and Insect Bites

Getting a bug bite can be a concerning experience, especially if you don’t know what type of tiny creature left you with that red, throbbing welt on your skin. Don’t panic — most bug bites and stings from common insects are harmless and heal quickly.

But some bug bites and stings, like those from fire ants, wasps, hornets, and bees, may cause intense pain or even a serious allergic reaction. Others, like poisonous spider bites, require immediate emergency medical care.

Is decaf coffee good for you?

Decaf coffee can be a great option for people who like the taste of coffee but don’t want the effects of caffeine.

Everyone feels these effects differently, and some of us are particularly sensitive to caffeine. This can cause unwanted symptoms, like restlessness and disrupted sleep.

People without this sensitivity may just prefer decaf in the afternoon or evening because it doesn’t keep them up.

In this article, we look at how producers make decaf coffee, whether it’s good for you, and how it compares to its caffeinated cousin.

What can cause yellow poop?

If you eat them regularly, some yellow and orange foods can turn your poop yellow. So can certain health conditions, including infections and celiac disease.

When your body breaks down red blood cells, this produces a yellow pigment called bilirubin. The liver uses it to make bile, a liquid that leaves the body in poop and contributes to its typical brown color.

Too much bilirubin can cause yellow poop. And several problems with the liver, pancreas, and gallbladder can lead to a bilirubin imbalance.

What is fat, and how much do you need?

For a long time, fats had a bad reputation. But now we know that they’re a key part of a healthy, balanced diet.

Not all fats are equally healthy, though. In this article, we’ll explore the different types and what roles they play in your body.

Plus, we’ll look at why there’s no one-size-fits-all answer to the question of how much fat to eat every day.

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics recommends that you get 20–35% of your daily energy intake from mono- and polyunsaturated fats and less than 10% from saturated fats.

The best probiotic foods to include in your diet

Probiotic foods contain live bacteria that can benefit the community of bugs in your gut. This community of trillions of microbes — called the gut microbiome — plays a major role in your overall health.

Many foods that provide probiotic bacteria are fermented. Fermentation means using the controlled growth of microbes in the production process.

For example, to make kefir, you add kefir grains that ferment milk.

Are Dogs Lactose Intolerant?

Plenty of dogs like milk and cheese and would happily grab a taste if you offered, but dairy products don’t go down well for all dogs. Many dogs are lactose intolerant.

Lactose intolerance means your dog can’t digest dairy products. Specifically, they can’t digest lactose, which is the sugar in milk. If a dog (or person!) with lactose intolerance eats dairy, they’ll likely experience symptoms like bloating, stomach pain, diarrhoea, nausea, or vomiting.

7 Tips for Staying with Your Dog in a Hotel
sfs

So you’ve found a pet-friendly hotel to take your pet with you on vacation, but… how pet-friendly a hotel is depends on the chain, location, and type of guests you’re sharing a wall with. You don’t want to run into a situation where the hotel suddenly can’t accommodate your pet.

Preparing your dog to be a good hotel guest is a combination of:

  • Over-communicating with hotel staff

  • Anticipating guest etiquette

  • Being prepared with your dog’s toys, bowls, food, and bed

  • Crate training your dog

  • Giving your dog time to adjust

How Do Dogs Learn Their Names?

Like our human friends, some dogs are more verbal than others. Our Australian Shepherd, for example, sings a brand-new canine opera each morning. My Catahoula says hello with a simple tail wag and sweet hound-dog eyes.

Dogs are equally varied when it comes to understanding human language. Some pick up just a few basic words, while others, like a border collie named Chaser, understand more than 1,000 names for different objects. Tell Chaser to fetch “Uncle Fuzz” instead of...

Rover’s Guide to the Holidays:
8 Ways to Celebrate

The holidays can bring joy, togetherness, and excitement for all non-furry and furry family members. However, before you put your feet up with the King’s speech and whatever’s happening to Doctor Who in this year’s Christmas special, you should be taking extra steps to make the holidays as comfortable and enjoyable as possible for your pet.

Cats and dogs might love guests, and the surplus of gifts and family time may be at the top of their letter to Santa. However, the holidays can also bring a lot of unexpected foot traffic, tempting (but dangerous) human food, potentially harmful candles and decorations, freezing weather, and changes to the home that need navigating to keep your pet safe.

"Hello. It is me, Adam."

(Felman, A., Come Dine With Me, Series 45, Episode 26)

What is an Adam? Me, for starters. (Seriously, did you not read the quote? It was very insightful. Keep up.)

I’m nothing without my wife (from Texas) and two rescue dogs (from Ukraine and Cumbria), all of whom are very small but loud and near-constantly seething with rage. When they’re not consuming my waking hours wholesale, music is a passion that always jostles for space with writing. I produce ambient, electronic, weird piano-y stuff and stupid hip-hop songs in my studio, and I loop completely improvised songs on the road as the Felman half of Felman & Teej. When my wife realises I’ve escaped, she puts me back to work as her personal karaoke machine.

My love affair with music is bittersweet, as I have slightly wonky ears and use hearing aids. However, this makes me a touch more valuable and relatable when I volunteer for the RNID’s pop-up hearing aid clinics across Sussex. I hope.

I also enjoy fitness nearly as much as I like my wife’s cookies. In 2022, I embarked on a rigorous weight loss and fitness journey (because up until that point, the cookies won by too large a margin) and more or less stayed trim. (I’ll be training for my first 100K ultramarathon this year to fundraise for the RNID. I can only imagine that my love of exercise will come to an abrupt end at around 10K and I’ll be back to cookies soon enough.)

I’m also big on TV and Film and the proud owner of (perhaps) Worthing’s largest Nic Cage DVD collection. One of my favourite pastimes is dying on the hill that there are more good Fast and Furious sequels than Star Wars movies. In reality, Paddington 2 beats all 317 of the aforementioned properties.
